We welcome the Government’s proposals announced today to expand the remit of the Post Office to include banking and other financial services.
This will help ensure the future sustainability of the Post Office network and has the potential to provide access to essential services such as bank accounts, savings and loans to financially excluded people in rural areas.
Only 1 in 8 banks and building societies are located in rural areas although a fifth of the population live there. We hope today’s announcement will also prompt the exploration of partnerships between the Post Office and credit unions to assist financial inclusion in rural areas.
