9 July 2020: Democracy and Trade – No need for trade-offs?

Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) is delighted to host Richard Graham MP, the PM’s Trade Envoy to ASEAN, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, and Rushanara Ali MP, UK Trade Envoy to Bangladesh, for a discussion on democracy and trade on Thursday 9 July.

The challenges involved in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic have threatened to weaken democracy in many countries globally, at a time when the UK is looking to position itself as ‘Global Britain’ and forge new trading arrangements around the world. So what is the relationship between democracy and trade? And is it possible for the UK to navigate this geopolitical environment without compromising its values or its economic interests?

In conversation with WFD’s Chief Executive and former diplomat, Anthony Smith, Richard Graham MP and Rushanara Ali MP will explore these questions, drawing upon their experiences working with WFD on democracy support and as UK Government Trade Envoys.
