Innovate UK commissioned this independent report by Professor Mariana Mazzucato, of the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex, to explore how Innovate UK might better engage with businesses and other stakeholders to strengthen the UK’s innovation system and commercialisation.
The author argues that what’s needed today is less fear about ‘picking winners’, and a more dynamic conversation about:
giving direction to change the types of organisations that can welcome the trial and error this entails a more ‘symbiotic’ relationship between public and private actors, so we socialise both risks and rewardsIt is intended as a way to change the conversation about the kind of growth we should strive for and how to get there.
The views expressed in the piece are the author’s alone, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Innovate UK.
