This is the third survey of NHS foundation trust governors undertaken since the role was introduced in 2004.
Overall, governors are more positive about their role and are making progress in their statutory duties and engagement with staff, the board of directors, trust members, patients and service users and the public.
Despite this, governors require further support to make sure they feel trained to carry out their role and are able to communicate effectively with the public and their membership.
Monitor would like to thank all the governors who took the time to complete the questionnaire.
The aims of this survey were to: explore whether governors feel they are equipped and trained to exercise their statutory powers and duties compare the results to those obtained from Monitor’s surveys of governors in 2007 and 2010, to assess whether progress has been made seek governors’ perspective of the impact of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 on their role, and determine whether governors understand their new duties and feel able to carry them out highlight where foundation trusts may best focus their resources in supporting governorsLocal copy of Governor_survey_report_final.pdf
