Guidance: Common basic data set (CBDS): database

Updated: Updated the common basic data set (CBDS) database with 13 October 2014 version.

The CBDS is a file containing definitions for common data items used in software systems in schools and local authorities, eg school management information systems.

The CBDS also underpins the structure of many Department for Education data collections.

All data collection specifications should be read in conjunction with the CBDS.

The CBDS spreadsheet organises definitions through:

CBDS levels, eg pupil and school CBDS modules, eg school characteristics data items (eg ethnicity) and the code set defining them

The spreadsheet can be filtered to provide data items relevant to a particular collection.

The CBDS is regularly updated - any changes, along with the reasons for them, are published as request for change documents.
