Government response: Justine Greening welcomes new UN resolution to protect aid workers

I’m proud that Britain has secured this landmark UN Security Council resolution on the protection of humanitarian workers. It urges countries to ensure the safety of aid workers, condemns the use of violence and intimidation against them and calls for full humanitarian access to people in need.

Aid workers are the difference between life and death for millions of people, from Syria and Iraq to Gaza and South Sudan, but the number of attacks on humanitarian workers is increasing and we are witnessing senseless losses.

So far this year 79 aid workers have lost their lives, more than in the whole of 2012. This is why Britain last week announced a £1 million package of support to improve the personal safety of humanitarian workers, including extra training and facilities for those operating in dangerous environments.
