New exhibition celebrates disabled people working across the justice system

A new exhibition recognising the contributions and experiences of those living with medical conditions or who are disabled, and work across the justice system, has opened at the Royal Courts of Justice. The ‘Justice Without Limits’ exhibition features each participant’s own story, highlighting the diversity of their experiences and encouraging greater understanding of the barriers they have faced and overcome throughout their careers. The exhibition has been organised by His Majesty’s Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS).

Stories from members of the judiciary include Rebecca, a Tribunal Judge in the Social Entitlement Chamber, who shares her experience of living with Crohn’s disease; and Rahim, a District Judge (Magistrates’ Court) and Disability Qualified Tribunal Member, who discusses living with both visible and non-visible conditions.

The Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill, hosted a reception on Tuesday 27 October to mark the opening of the exhibition.

Speaking to attendees at the event, the Lady Chief Justice said:

“There are participants from across the judiciary, the legal profession and HMCTS; people who have known about their condition from childhood, those who have a lifelong illness but received a late diagnosis, and those whose condition developed later in life. Such variety only serves to emphasise that there is no one way to encounter or to live with disability. Each person and their experience is unique.”

She added:

“I hope that everyone visiting this exhibition – whether they have a disability or not – takes encouragement from these stories and sees a role for themselves in the justice system.”

The exhibition will remain on display in the Great Hall of the Royal Courts of Justice until 21 December 2026. It is open for everyone to attend and is part of an ongoing initiative to use the Great Hall as a space for law-related exhibitions. There is also a virtual version of the exhibition online if you are unable to visit in person.
