We are proud to share that Mucky Nutz has received a King’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation for our Rear MugGuard.
The King’s Awards for Enterprise are among the UK’s most prestigious business awards. Approved personally by His Majesty The King, they celebrate outstanding achievement by UK businesses and mark 60 years of recognising excellence.
Based in Bude, Cornwall, Mucky Nutz is an independent cycling accessories brand with a team of just four people. Receiving this recognition is an especially proud moment for us and shows what can be achieved through persistence, practical problem-solving and listening closely to customers.
What the Award recognisesThe Award recognises the innovation behind our Rear MugGuard: a modular and adjustable rear mudguard designed specifically for modern mountain bikes.
Traditional rear mudguards often force riders to choose between a small guard that protects the bike’s rear shock and linkage, or a larger guard that provides fuller protection for the rider. The Rear MugGuard was created to offer both options in one adaptable product.
It can be used in a shorter configuration for everyday protection or fitted with its extension for greater coverage in wet and muddy conditions. Riders can switch between the two without tools, while an adjustment dial allows the angle and clearance to be fine-tuned for different bikes.
The Rear MugGuard was conceived and developed in the UK and is manufactured here from 100% recycled plastic. It is supplied in a reusable kit bag made from recycled bottles, avoiding the need for single-use packaging. The product was developed over several years through research, prototyping and extensive real-world testing. It has since become one of the most important products in the Mucky Nutz range.
Why it matters to the businessThe Award is a powerful recognition of what can be achieved through careful product development, determination and listening closely to customers.
It also reflects the support of our UK manufacturing partners, distributors, retailers and riders around the world.
Developing the Rear MugGuard strengthened our experience and capabilities in design, prototyping, testing and manufacturing, giving us greater confidence to take on more ambitious projects.
It also provides an opportunity to reflect on how far the business has come. What began with a simple mudguard idea has grown into a recognised British cycling brand, designing products in Cornwall and selling them to riders around the world. Recipients are entitled to use the King’s Awards Emblem for five years, in line with official guidance, and will receive the Award locally from His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant.

“The Rear MugGuard came from refusing to accept that riders had to choose between a small guard that protected the bike or a larger one that protected the rider. We wanted to create one product that did both properly, fitted a wide range of bikes and was made responsibly here in the UK.
“It took several years of development, testing and refinement to get right. As a small independent business, every investment and product decision matters, so this Award is a wonderful recognition of the commitment shown by the whole team.”
Top tips for future applicantsWe would encourage other small businesses not to be put off by the application process or assume that the Awards are only for larger organisations.
Allow plenty of time, gather your evidence early and explain your achievement clearly. Do not assume the assessors already understand your industry or product. Describe the problem you identified, what you did differently and the measurable difference it has made.
It is also worth being honest about the challenges involved. Innovation rarely follows a straight line, and the setbacks, changes and lessons learned are an important part of the story.
Most importantly, do not underestimate what a small team can achieve. A business does not need enormous resources to create something genuinely innovative. It needs a strong idea, evidence that it works and the persistence to keep improving it.
