Some of England's most special rivers flow almost unnoticed through our countryside. Chalk streams are among the rarest freshwater habitats on Earth, with around 85% of the world's 280 chalk streams found in England.
These rivers are renowned for their crystal-clear waters, rich wildlife and cultural heritage. Yet many have been heavily modified over generations, leaving them disconnected from their natural processes and struggling to support healthy ecosystems.
This summer, we worked in partnership with the Wild Trout Trust, Affinity Water and local landowner Jeffrey Pearman to undertake a major restoration project on a one-kilometre stretch of the River Rib at Latchford, near Standon in Hertfordshire, to help return a section of this precious chalk stream to a more natural condition.
A river shaped by the past
Like many rivers across England, this stretch of the River Rib has been altered by decades of dredging, straightening and neighbouring agricultural land use.
Over time, these changes deepened the river, removed important gravel habitats and disconnected the channel from its floodplain. Natural processes that once maintained a healthy and diverse river environment were lost, contributing to the ‘moderate’ ecological condition of the waterbody under the 2025 Water Framework Directive classification.

What made this project particularly exciting was the opportunity to think beyond the existing river channel.
The landowner, Jeffrey Pearman, was willing to dedicate additional land to the project, allowing us to create a more ambitious restoration than would otherwise have been possible. Rather than simply modifying the existing channel, the team was able to create approximately 300 metres of ‘re-wiggled’ river channel and reconnect the river to its wider floodplain.
This approach gives the river more space to move through the landscape naturally, helping it respond to both high and low flow conditions while creating valuable habitat for wildlife.
The approach reflects the principles of the Chalk Stream Restoration Strategy, which promotes restoring natural river processes and reconnecting rivers with their floodplains to improve the long-term health and resilience of chalk stream catchments.

Jeff's ambition as a landowner allowed us to push what was possible here. Rather than being constrained by the existing channel, we were able to create something much more ambitious for the River Rib and the wildlife that depends on it."
Restoring natural processes
The restoration works were delivered by Aquamaintain and overseen by the Wild Trout Trust, with support from the Environment Agency and Affinity Water.
The project included:
Creation of approximately 300 metres of new channel. Restoration of one kilometre of chalk stream habitat. Reconnection of the river to its floodplain. Creation of wetland scrapes, a backwater and shallow ponds. Bank regrading and habitat enhancement works. Installation of natural wood features to diversify flows and habitats. Introduction of significant quantities of gravel to improve spawning habitat and restore characteristic chalk stream features.An unexpected but beneficial aspect of the project was the discovery of substantial quantities of gravel during excavation works. Some of this material was processed and reused on site, helping recreate the riverbed conditions required by native chalk stream species.
Benefits for wildlife
Healthy chalk streams support an extraordinary range of plants and animals.
The restoration will improve habitat for fish species including brown trout, while also benefiting aquatic plants, invertebrates and a wide variety of wetland wildlife. The creation of new wetland habitats and improved floodplain connectivity is expected to provide new opportunities for species such as water voles, otters, wading birds and insects.
By restoring natural river processes, we are not only improving conditions within the channel itself but helping to recover ecological connections across the wider landscape.

Projects of this scale simply cannot happen without strong partnerships.
The Environment Agency provided funding through the Chalk Partnership Fund and Water Environment Improvement Fund. The Wild Trout Trust led on project development and delivery, while Affinity Water provided support and funding through its ambitious River Restoration programme as part of its wider environmental commitments to protect chalk stream catchments, enhance biodiversity and improve water quality, helping to leave the environment in a measurably improved state. The success of the project also relied on the enthusiasm and commitment of the landowner, who not only made his land available for the restoration works but also provided practical support to Aquamaintain throughout project delivery.
The project demonstrates what can be achieved when organisations bring together their expertise, resources and shared commitment to improving the environment.

Looking ahead
While construction has now been completed, the story of the River Rib restoration is only just beginning.
Extensive seeding and tree planting is planned, which will help transform the currently exposed riverbanks, with wetter weather helping vegetation to establish and stabilise the banks alongside ongoing monitoring to understand how the river responds over time. The site will also provide valuable lessons for future chalk stream restoration projects across Hertfordshire and beyond.
Our ambition is that the River Rib becomes an example of how working with natural processes can help restore England's globally rare chalk streams, improve resilience to climate change and create thriving environments for people and wildlife. In doing so, the project supports the Environment Agency's EA2030 ambitions for healthy air, land and water supporting nature's recovery, and for creating a nation that is more resilient to climate change.
By giving the river room to breathe once again, we are helping to secure a healthier future for this special ecosystem.
