Design once, reuse everywhere

Have you ever trawled through government design systems looking for a component or a pattern to reuse? If you have, you'll know it can take you down a rabbit hole.

Design systems help organisations design consistent user experiences. But finding the right asset in one design system is hard enough, let alone searching across several.

That's where the Gov Reuse Library comes in.

Under one digital roof, the library brings together design systems, content style guides and other reusable products and services created across central and local government.

It’s based on a simple idea: if we make it easier for teams to find and reuse digital assets, like tables, address lookups and error messages, we could save time, cut costs, and deliver better services for users.

Launched in September 2025, the library is the brainchild of the Ministry of Justice design team in collaboration with the Government Digital Service (GDS).

It’s managed by a working group of cross-government practitioners, including the Home Office, helping to ensure it reflects the needs of teams across the public sector.

One of the Home Office content design team’s early contributions was to get all 14 departmental content style guides added to the library.

This helps content creators across the public sector to use language more consistently, write in plain English and reduces the need to create guidance that already exists elsewhere.

Reuse design systems and style guides with confidence

“But doesn’t Google do this already?” you might ask. True, all of the design systems and style guides in the library are online and can be found using any search engine.

But finding this information is only half the challenge. The Gov Reuse Library not only houses them in one convenient place, it curates them to help you find what you need faster.

Our workshops suggest that people searching for reusable assets don’t always trust what they find and need guidance on using components for more specialised design needs.

A team of Home Office user researchers recently joined the working group and are looking for people to take part in research to help us make the library meet your needs.

AI-powered search feature

One of the features we will be testing is an AI search box that allows you to search all design systems using everyday language.

The AI prototype, produced in collaboration with digital agency, Red Hat, was made available temporarily in June for the UX Scotland conference.

In just 3 days, 621 searches were made using the AI search box, suggesting there’s strong interest in this kind of feature. The most common searches were for:

data display, tables, and lists, like a ‘sortable table’ selection, filtering, and input components, like an ‘address lookup’ UI components and patterns, like ‘error messages’ Using natural language to find components quickly

One of the most useful aspects of the AI prototype is that you don’t need to know the exact name of the component or pattern you’re looking for. You can simply describe the problem you’re trying to solve in your own words.

For example, if you enter ‘I need to draw strong attention to something important, but it might not always be critical’, the tool returns suggestions like notification banners, alerts and inset text.

The AI prototype is still a work in progress, but the feedback has been very positive. We hope to make it a permanent feature on the site if we can demonstrate its value to users.

Building a community around the Gov Reuse Library

We want to build a community around the Gov Reuse Library so that as it continues to develop, it reflects your needs and becomes part of your go-to resources.

Much like a bricks and mortar library, we see it as a place to access free information, learn from each other, encourage sharing and promote collaboration.
