Bringing increased focus to judicial diversity across the legal sector, a new Judicial and Legal Diversity Board has launched. Co-chaired by the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales and the Lord Chancellor, the board met for the first time yesterday (Thursday 21 May).
Diversity within the judiciary has long been a priority for the Lady Chief Justice. The new board builds on ongoing work, underpinned by the five-year Judicial D&I strategy, which launched in January of this year.
The board brings together organisations from across the sector. This includes the Judicial Appointments Commission, the Bar Council, the Law Society, CILEx, the Legal Services Board, the Judicial Office and the Ministry of Justice.
It signifies a commitment to support greater collaboration to collectively increase diversity across the judiciary and legal professions by ensuring that we are developing the judges of the future.
At the launch of the board, the Lady Chief Justice said:
“Judicial diversity remains a key priority for me. The establishment of this Board is a welcome forum for us to work alongside the legal professions in providing opportunities for people from all walks of life to become part of a judiciary that is inclusive, respectful and representative of the society that we serve.”
