The Prime Minister has spoken of the “brave steps” taken by Poland two decades ago as the country marks the 20th anniversary of the fall of Communism.
Celebrations are being held across Poland to remember the defeat of the ruling Communist Party in the country’s first free elections since the Second World War on 4 June 1989.
The anniversary was one of the topics of discussion when Mr Brown met Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw in April.
The PM said:
“Twenty years ago, the Polish people took brave steps towards democracy, freedom and independence. Poland’s many accomplishments - membership of NATO and the European Union, a strong economy and free society - bear testament to the courage, hard work and vision of the Polish people themselves.
“Poles also make an important contribution to British social and economic life. I was delighted to make my first visit to Poland as Prime Minister earlier this year, and look forward to seeing Poland becoming an even stronger partner in the years to come.”
