The PM has stressed the need for international cooperation and a focus on job creation as key elements in the fight against recession.
Speaking to journalists during his three-day regional tour, the PM spoke of his commitment to help people back into work and to see more apprenticeships created during the downturn. He praised companies such as Contour Premium Aircraft Seating, one of two businesses visited today, for its success in the face of difficult economic conditions.
The PM said:
“What we’re looking for is the international co-operation necessary to see this downturn retreating further, and we need that co-operation as we’re all dependent on each other.
“It’s about jobs - it’s about safeguarding jobs, and it’s about creating more jobs…I’m keen to see that apprenticeships increase in this downturn, rather than the other way around.”
The Prime Minister, accompanied by Wales’ First Minister Rhodri Morgan and Welsh Secretary Paul Murphy, chatted to workers during his visit to Contour, which employs 980 people. Earlier in the day he also visited SCC, an IT company in Birmingham.
The PM also led the official opening ceremony of Isambard Community School in Swindon, one of several in the city to have been rebuilt or newly built in the last ten years.
Yesterday Mr Brown and the Cabinet travelled to Liverpool to meet members of the public and hold a Q&A session at the BT convention centre.
