Our Commissioners will be visiting the Borough of Congleton to see first-hand some of the area's successful businesses, and to visit a number of local market towns.
Congleton is perceived as a prosperous area, especially as it borders on some major urban centres, but this can hide problems such as disadvantage and economic under-performance. This can make is difficult to focus attention on issues such as affordable rural housing or low wages. In more remote and peripheral rural areas it can be more straightforward to identify such challenges.
The visit will provide our Commissioners with an unique opportunity to understand specific characteristics of the rural economy. This is particularly relevant as our statutory role involves advising on the rural economy, with a particular emphasis on tackling under-performance.
