14 August 2020: A virtual national youth parliament in Uganda

The National Youth Parliament is an important political and legislative space and creative advocacy vehicle that brings together young people from across the country and youth focused organisations to amplify youth voices to legislators.

The National Youth Parliament is organized by WFD in collaboration with the European Union, Faraja Africa Foundation, Action Aid Uganda, Restless Development Uganda, the National Youth Council, and other stakeholders.

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic youth engagement in political and legislative processes even with the national elections are around the corner has been limited. Ironically, young people are still expected to be part of the decision-making processes despite the existing limitations that hinder free movement, and the high cost of internet or media that is meant help amplify their voices or even be part of the planned scientific elections.

This year, the National Youth Parliament will rally support for advocacy and important issues like days of activism, public policy training, capacity building leadership training, consultation meetings, and digital dialogue with the main parliament, among others. Ahead of the youth parliament, sub-regional Youth Parliaments and consultative engagements/dialogues will be held in different regions across the country and will feed into the National Youth Parliament in Uganda and the East African Youth Parliament Sitting in November 2020.

The guest speaker will be the Ambassador of the European Union, H.E. Attilio Pacifici and the parliament will be opened by the Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda. The event will also be live on TV and social media.
