A subsidence event affecting a number of properties occurred within a residential housing estate in north-east England.

Technical guidance note (TGN01/2019) has been issued following successful completion of engineering works, and following a sustained period of monitoring, to ensure awareness of the risks posed by historical coal mining legacy.

It is relevant to local authority planners, surveyors, developers and geotechnical and engineering consultants, for when they are considering coal mining legacy issues.
