The following summary of planned new and ongoing road improvements over the coming week is correct as of Friday 1 July, and could be subject to change due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. All our improvement work is carried out with the aim of causing as little disruption as possible.
M56 junction 5Eastbound carriageway entry slip road surfacing and closure. A temporary closure will be in place on M56 junction 5 eastbound entry slip road for surfacing works from today (1 July) for approximately 2 nights, between the hours of 8pm and 7am. Signed diversions will be in place.
M56 junction 7Eastbound carriageway slip road surfacing and closures. On Monday 4 July, loop cutting and replacement of road markings will be taking place. A temporary closure will be in place between the hours of 8pm and 5am on M56 junction 7 eastbound entry and exit slip roads. Signed diversions.
M6 junctions 16 to 19: Cheshire smart motorwayWork is underway for the smart motorway upgrade – typically with 1 or 2 lanes closed overnight between junctions in both directions and/or mobile lane closures along short sections of carriageway.

M6 junctions 19 Knutsford to 20 LymmA £14.5 million programme of bridge repairs and new safety barriers is underway with narrow lanes, 50 mph speed limit and use of the hard shoulder as a running lane in places. Overnight work to remove the temporary narrow lanes is currently taking place, requiring lane closures. Full carriageway closures will be taking place next weekend to remove road works.

M6 junction 21AResurfacing on the northbound entry and exit slip roads at junction 21a. This will involve a full closure of M62 eastbound to M6 northbound and M62 westbound to M6 northbound link roads and a full closure of M6 northbound to M62 westbound and M6 northbound to M62 eastbound link roads, on or shortly after 4 July 2016 for approximately 5 nights, between the hours of 8pm and 5am. Signed diversions will be in place.
M6 junction 26Surfacing works shortly on the M6 southbound entry slip road at junction 26. Works are scheduled to take place on the 8, 14, and 15 July between the hours of 8pm and 5am (7am at weekend). A temporary closure will be in place on M6 junction 26 southbound entry slip road during the dates and times stated above. Also a full closure of the M6 junction 26 southbound entry slip roads. Signed diversions will be in place.
M6 junction 34 LancasterLancashire County Council work off the motorway on the Heysham Link project requires a lane 1 and hard shoulder closure in both directions on the motorway around junction 34.
The work also includes occasional M6 carriageway and slip road closures detailed in weekly traffic bulletins available on the Lancashire County Council website.
M6 junction 44 CarlisleOvernight – 8pm to 6am - work between Monday 4 and Sunday 17 July involves resurfacing lane 1 of the southbound carriageway around junction 44 and also carrying out drainage repairs with hard shoulder, lane 1 and lane 2 closures. Lane 1 will continue to be closed during the day and a 50mph speed limit will also operate around the clock past the short section of road works.
The southbound entry slip road at junction 44 will also be closed for 1 or 2 nights with drivers asked to use the northbound M6 to join the southbound carriageway from the roundabout at junction 45.
M60 junction 8 Sale to junction 20 RochdaleA major scheme is taking place to cut congestion and improve journey times on parts of the M60 and the M62 in Greater Manchester. The scheme involves overnight slip road and carriageway closures with a 50mph limit in place for the safety of workers and drivers. A significant programme of temporary night closures has been programmed to fit gantries with wiring and signs, which will take the project to May 2017.

M60 junction 22 to junction 24Night closures on the clockwise carriageway, Monday to Friday from June 20, 9pm to 5am (7am Saturday mornings), for 7 weeks, for resurfacing. Signed diversions.
M61 Rivington Services (between junctions 6 and 8)Overnight – 8pm to 5am - resurfacing of the entry slip roads and exit slip roads to the services on both sides of the motorway will be taking place over the next few weeks with northbound slip roads closed on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday (5, 6, 10 July) and the southbound on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday 12, 13 and 17 July. Access in and out of Rivington Motorway Services will not be available during the dates and times stated.
M67 junction 1 to Junction 4Road marking renewal started on 20 June and will take approximately 2 weeks to complete in a number of phases, Monday to Sunday, between the hours of 10pm and 5am (7am at weekends). Night closures on the westbound carriageway between junction 1 and junction 4 nightly until Sunday (3 July). Signed diversions.
A556 Knutsford to BowdonA £192 million project is being carried out to create a new dual carriageway linking the M56 to the M6 in Cheshire. A temporary 40mph speed limit is currently in place between Bucklow Hill and Bowdon, and the new dual carriageway is expected to open in spring 2017.

A56 Rising Bridge roundaboutWork has started to improve safety and reduce delays at Rising Bridge roundabout near Haslingden. Works will be carried out daily between 10pm and 5am, and will involve single closures on A56 and Rising Bridge roundabout. Some full carriageway closures will be needed, during which times fully signed diversion routes will be in place. Works are scheduled for completion at the end of July.
A585 junction 3 to GreenhalghResurfacing works will be undertaken on the A585 requiring full carriageway closures between junction 3 of the M55 and Windy Harbour junction, night time only on the nights of Monday and Tuesday (4 and 5 July). Diversions onto local authority routes will be in place and local access will be permitted for businesses and residents.
A590 GreenoddLane 1 of the eastbound carriageway just west of Greenodd roundabout is currently closed until further notice while we undertake a survey of the embankment.
A590 Lindal-in-FurnessDrainage installation works to alleviate flooding is due to be completed by 9 July. Temporary traffic signals will be used at various times, throughout the day or night, with on occasion, motorists being escorted through the works using a convoy system. A temporary mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with this being reduced to 10mph when the convoy system is used.
A66 Brougham to Center ParcsResurfacing works will commence on 13 June and run until the end of July. Temporary traffic signals will be in place primarily at night but at times during the day for certain stages of the work, with, on occasion, motorists being escorted through the works using a convoy system. A temporary mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with this being reduced to 10mph when the convoy system is used.
A66 West of Scales to Mungrisedale junctionResurfacing works will commence on 27 June and run until 22 July. Temporary traffic signals will be in place overnight with motorists being escorted through the works using a convoy system. A temporary mandatory 40mph speed limit will be in place for the duration of the works, with this being reduced to 10mph when the convoy system is used.
A66 Braithwaite to Portinscale safety improvementsWork to improve footpaths, cycle ways, road markings and traffic signs started on Monday, 9 May and is due to be completed by Friday 8 July. Temporary traffic lights will be in place but usually between 9am and 4pm – outside peak travel times – to help reduce inconvenience to road users, although they may remain in situ out with these times for safety reasons.
A66 EmbletonWork to reduce flood risk on a mile stretch of the A66 at Embleton began in January and is expected to be completed by the end of July. Temporary traffic lights operate 24 hours a day for the safety of crews and drivers. Full road closures in both directions will also be required on some nights between 8pm and 6am, and at some weekends. When the road is closed, diversions for HGVs and other vehicles will be clearly signed. Drivers are advised to use the A591 and the A595. This route is not suitable for HGVs which should use the M6 and A595.
