Press release: Weekend closure on A184 at Gateshead

Contractors for Highways England are widening the slip road and constructing a dedicated feeder lane from the Lobley Hill junction to the A184 as part of the A1 Coal House to Metro Centre scheme

The slip road will be closed from 8pm on Friday 3 June until 6am on Monday 6 June to allow the work to be carried out safely.

Highways England project manager Lynne Biddles said:

During the weekend closure, we will be carrying out drainage and resurfacing work to the slip road as well as painting on the road markings, putting in lighting and carrying out work to the verges.

It is essential that this work takes place so the scheme as a whole can progress, with the extra lanes on track to open to traffic at the end of June.

Once complete, the scheme will help reduce congestion and support opportunities for development and economic growth as part of the Northern Powerhouse initiative. It will also increase capacity and reduce accidents.

This scheme is part of the government’s 5-year road investment strategy which will see more than 1,300 miles of new lanes created and £15 billion invested in major roads by 2020.

Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place during the work with traffic being diverted to junction 70 (Dunston) and back along the southbound carriageway to join the A184 at junction 69 (Gateshead Quays).

All the details about the closures will be available on the scheme website.
