Form: Survey, research or conservation licences for protected species

Updated: Added report forms and replaced application forms with revised, interactive PDF versions.

These licences allow you to kill, take, disturb or possess a protected species when carrying out:

surveys research for scientific or educational purposes conservation work

Form A29 should be used for European protected species (those listed in schedule 2 of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010) and to the animals listed in schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

You should use form A30 if you need to use prohibited methods (those shown in section 10 of the form). This form can be used for animals listed in schedule 4 of the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2010 and schedule 6 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Please note that you need to use a separate survey application form for:

bats badgers dormice great crested newts white-clawed crayfish References

You usually need to give references when you apply for this licence if:

you haven’t held a licence for the species or a similar species for the last 3 years you want to use methods for which you haven’t previously been licensed Report action taken

You must return the relevant report form (available above) within 2 weeks of your licence expiring, even if you’ve taken no action.

You can also use this form to renew your licence.
