Guidance: UKCES Futures Programme: an introduction

The UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) is running a programme of competitions that target specific workforce development problems. This introduction document provides guidance on:

the main features of the programme what is expected from applicant bids the support successful bids will receive the need for innovation and the impact UKCES intends to create

Current competition

On 19 March 2015 we launched a competition to explore the role that anchor institutions can play to develop the management and leadership of small firms, and what type of institutions can play this role. Full details of this competion can be found on the competition page.

Competition history

The first competition was launched on 30 April 2014. It targeted skills problems in the off-site construction industry. For more information, consult the ‘brief’ in the collection below. A live webinar was held on 2 May 2014. Applications for this competition closed on 18 June 2014.

The second competition, that aims to increase demand management and leadership skills, was launched on 16 June 2014. The ‘competition brief’ can be found below. A live webinar for this competition was held on 9 July 2014. Applications for this competition closed on 30th July 2014.

The third competition, looking at progression and pathways in retail and hospitality, was launched on 10 October 2014. The ‘competition brief’ can be found below. A live webinar for this competition was held on 22 October, with a follow up webinar on 24 October 2014. Applications for this competition closed on 28 November 2014.

The fourth competition launched on 29 January 2015. This competition sought to identify ways of boosting the skills and business practices needed to maximise the value of UK innovation, through focusing on the commercial and management skills required to support the innovation process. The Competition Brief can be found below. Live webinars for this competition were held on 18 and 19 February. Applications for this competition closed on 11 March 2015.
