Statutory guidance: Schedule 4: UK nationally approved electricity meters

Updated: The following document has been updated: Schedule 4: UK nationally approved electricity meters

UK nationally approved electricity meters are approved under the Electricity Act 1989 and the pattern or construction of the meter type must conform to the requirements specified in the accompanying regulations.

Formal approval certificates are issued by the National Measurement Office (NMO) to manufacturers of electricity meters. The meters are then listed in Schedule 4 of the Meters (Certification) Regulations, (SI 1998/1566), which is a statutory register of all pattern approved electricity meters suitable for billing purposes in the UK.
