These closures will allow for the completion of existing emergency resurfacing, with additional closures being put in place to enable the safe removal and replacement of the central reserve barrier.
The remaining two closures for the emergency resurfacing works will take place on the southbound carriageway between junction 18 and junction 16 this evening (Friday) between 10pm and 6am. The northbound section between junction 16 and junction 18 will then be closed overnight on Saturday to complete the resurfacing.
Once the emergency repairs are complete a protective steel barrier needs to be installed before the existing central reserve barrier at junction 19 is dismantled and replaced. . Brian Gash, Highways Agency Senior Project Manager, said:
The work to resurface the M1 is progressing well and the new surface will ensure the ongoing safety of the M1 for road users.
The additional closures will allow us to replace the central reservation which is not related to the emergency repairs we’ve been busy with throughout this week.
We don’t take decisions to close roads lightly, but this work is imperative and will ultimately benefit road users, who will experience smoother journeys with less delays, in the longer term.
Those using this route during these times are advised to leave extra time for their journeys. We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause.
During the southbound closure for emergency resurfacing, traffic will be diverted via M1 junction 18, then the A5, A45 and back onto the M1 at junction 16. When the northbound closure is in place traffic will be diverted off at M1 junction 16, then the A45, the A5 and back onto M1 junction 18.
During the barrier upgrade work a diversion will be in place, taking drivers via the junction 19 exit to the M6 northbound, off the M6 at junction 1, then back east towards the M1 junction 19 entry sliproad.
