The Lord Chancellor, in consultation with the Master of the Rolls, has appointed Richard Viney as a Barrister Member of the Civil Procedure Rule Committee (CPRC) from 1 September 2014. The appointment is subject to clearance checks.
The appointment has been conducted in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ Code of Practice on appointments to Public Bodies.
The Civil Procedure Act 1997 led to the establishment of the CPRC and gave the Committee powers to make the Civil Procedure Rules.
The first set of rules were made by statutory instrument in 1998 and came into force in April 1999. The Committee also considers Practice Directions and pre-Action protocols.
Biography – Richard VineyRichard was called as a barrister in 1994 and now specialises in personal injury work with particular expertise in industrial disease claims and motor insurance policy issues. Richard acts for a mix of claimants and defendants and has developed a wide experience of court and advisory work.
Richard has been a Deputy District Judge on the West Midlands Circuit since 2010 involved in mainly civil work.
This appointment was made on merit in accordance with the principles of the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ Code of Practice.
In accordance with the Code of Practice of the Commissioner for Public Appointments there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity, if declared, to be made public. Richard Viney has declared that he has not been involved in any political activity.
