The latest National Statistics on Rail Transport produced by the Welsh Government were released on 30 October 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There were approximately 27 million rail passenger journeys which either started or ended in Wales in 2010-11, an increase of 5 per cent compared to the previous year. Over two-thirds (69 per cent) of these journeys were within Wales.
  • During 2010-11, Cardiff was the destination of almost two-fifths (39 per cent) of rail passenger journeys within Wales.
  • There were 18 train incidents in 2011, a decrease of 5 compared to the previous year. 16 of these incidents were due running into obstructions.
  • There was 1 potentially high-risk train accident in 2011. This was due to a train running into road vehicles at a level crossing.
  • In 2011 there were 6 railway fatalities. The majority of fatalities (5) were trespassers.
  • There were over 1,200 notifiable offences reported on the railways in Wales in 2011-12, a 25 per cent decrease from the previous year.
