The latest Annual Population Survey household results produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 6 September 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website The latest Annual Population Survey (APS) households’ results cover 2011.  This dataset enables household analyses to be carried out at a Local Authority level, including details of people in workless households, children in workless households, lone parents and housing tenure.  The latest release updates the bulletin previously released on 8 September 2011.

  • In 2011, 22.4 per cent of households in Wales were workless.  This compares with 18.9 per cent of households in the United Kingdom.
  • In 2011, Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil had the largest percentages of workless households in Wales, at 31.8 per cent and 30.1 per cent respectively. Monmouthshire (16.2 per cent) and the Vale of Glamorgan (17.3 per cent) had the lowest percentages of workless households.
  • In 2011, 18.6 per cent of children in Wales lived in a workless household compared with 15.9 per cent in the United Kingdom.
  • The overall percentage of lone parent families is higher in Wales (9.1 per cent) than in the UK (8.4 per cent). The highest percentages of lone parent households were found in Blaenau Gwent (12.2 per cent) and Newport (11.2 per cent).
