The latest National Statistics on the Annual Schools Census produced by the Welsh Government were released on 11 July 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on schools, teachers and pupils include data for Local Authorities and Wales at January 2012. In previous years, provisional school census results were made available in July with final results available in September. However, due to a shortening of the validation period for local authorities, this release provides final results.

The key points from the latest release (compared to January 2011) are:

  • 25 less local authority (LA) maintained schools and 229 fewer pupils;
  • 253.6 fewer teachers (full-time equivalent) in the LA maintained sector;
  • 974.0 additional (full-time equivalent) support staff;
  • pupil-teacher ratio in the LA maintained sector is 18.4 (up from 18.2 in 2011).

In 2012, data on ethnic background and national identity showed that:

  • 93.1 per cent of pupils aged 5 and over consider themselves to be of white ethnic background.
